How does this dosing regime sound

Hi TPT,

I was wondering if someone could help me with this dosing regime (I know there's a lack of phosphates)
20L/5G tank

5ml of a custom blend three times a week
5% Trace elements
3% KNO3
8% K2SO4
2% MgSO4
82% water

1ml Excel Daily

5ml Seachem Nitrogen three times a week

Plants will be glosso and dwarf hairgrass.

Thanks

It depends on how much light you have, whether that is an acceptable fertilizer mix or not. If you have high light it isn't likely to work very well.

Thanks. I guess I have high light, I have 28W of CFL? Also have Flourite black sand as a substrate.

Any suggestions on how to improve this?

Are you doing pressurized Co2? That will also make a big difference how much nutrients a tank needs.

high light and Co2 will both drive up the nutrient demand. Hoppy would be better at telling you what your light output is.

BUT this is what id recommend for a start.......

This one would be WITHOUT Co2

10-20 Gallons
1/8 tsp KNO3 3x a week
1/32 tsp KH2PO4 3x a week
1/32 tsp K2SO4 3x a week
1/32 tsp (2ml) traces 3x a week

THIS ONE WOULD BE WITH CO2

20-40 Gallons
1/4 tsp KNO3 3x a week
1/16 tsp KH2PO4 3x a week
1/16 tsp K2SO4 3x a week
1/16 tsp (5ml) traces 3x a week

Alternate Trace one day NPK/Macro Next day. Water change at the end of the week of 50% or more then do it all over again.

I would've dosed according to that except I bought this packet of fertilizers online. I have contacted the seller and asked him if he can supply me with KNO3 and K2SO4, and waiting for a reply.

No CO2, but I will dose excel.

Personally I like to Keep It Simple. Dry ferts are also way cheap and last a long time. I know we have some sellers here for ferts. I got mine from Nilocg here in the power sellers section as his prices are awesome and you get good stuff and ge carries everything including Glut (Excel)

For me at night I just measure out what I need to dose the next morning mix it in a syringe with water and in the morning squirt it into the tank and done.

I can't order dry Ferts off people on here, I assume it's illegal to ship it from America to New Zealand.

But I am trying to find it here in New Zealand

You are adding a lot of nitrogen with the Seachem Nitrogen.

And what is your water change schedule? Dosing have to be designed around that.

Hi all,

Have just got a reply from my supplier and can get 200g of KNO3 and 100g of K2SO4

If I mix them both into a 500ml bottle and dose 2ml (every x amount of days) then
25ppm nitrates
25ppm potassium?
According to this calculator http://calc.petalphile.com/mobile

Does this plus micros/traces/phosphate sound ok?

Do you have a photo of your tank and light setup? The amount of light you get from a screw-in CFL bulb depends on whether the bulb is vertical or horizontal, and how good the reflector is, plus how high it is from the substrate in the tank.

Hi hoppy,

I've seen you post from the lighting sticky, I'll get a photo later but it is vertically mounted, 10" from the substrate, white reflector, most of the bulb fits inside the reflector and can be adjusted to be right on top of the tank to 12" above.

Thanks

Okay does this sound better
50% H20 change-weekly
1/16 Tsp-KN03 3x a week
1/32 Tsp-K2SO4
1/8 Tsp-GH booster once a week
5ml or 1/16Tsp-Trace 3x a week(will change this)

I have removed KH2PO4, and replaced it with K2SO4 at half the amount because there is twice as much K in K2SO4 (roughly)

You have to supply phosphorous to the plants, not just nitrogen and potassium. KH2PO4 is a convenient way to do that. Removing it from your dosing is a mistake.

You very likely have extremely high light, with a 28 watt screw-in CFL bulb, vertically mounted in a "dome" type reflector, 10 inches from the substrate. Raise it to about 20 inches from the substrate, or use a 9 or 10 watt bulb about 15 inches from the substrate. Without seeing a picture of the reflector I don't know if it is a good one or not. If it isn't a good one you won't have nearly as much light.

Photo without bulb

With

Thank for your help hoppy, really appreciated. I couldn't source KH2PO4 hence that's why I didn't have any of it. I can get some garden fertilizer that contains phosphorus (9%) which can substitute for phosphorus if that is any consolation.

Quick bump.

I need to get a new fixture as one fell into the tank today... So I still have one 14W bulb, how much watts should I look at getting for the second bulb?
