need some help with CSM

since having my plantex from gw.com.. ive only had to make 2 batches.. ive been keeping them in the fridge but this second one has gone of real quick because the minifridge was off for about 2 days.. so its got mould in it. what i want to do is be able to either dry dose or just mix about 30ml of mix.

i have some digital scales for the job so i can measure the stuff out pretty good. but im a bit daft as to figuring out what i should mix with what? any ideas..

also can this stuff actually be dry dosed it seems to seperate quite a bit in the bag. i guess ide need to stick it in a big pot and mix it up but im wondering if i would lose certain chemicals if they seperate though the bigger grains when useing such small doses.

mouldy pmdd isnt for me. i did mix mgso4 to the mix and done it per gw.com
so any suggestions would be appriciated.

Mold? My CSM mix never gets mold, and is stored at room temperature, and typically hangs around for a month or two before it's used up.

If you're gettin tank water back into the container, it could precipitate some of the nutrients out of solution, or you could get this weird fungus looking stuff that doesn't affect the CSM mix or dosing it in the tank.

Hey malkore, I've had mold in my Plantex as well but it was being stored in a clear container. Using an dark/opaque container seems to help.

Doh, yeah I always use empty Flourish bottles, which are basically opaque.

Is it possible to dry dose this stuff? I'm about to order some, as my Seachem Flourish is almost empty.

the only problem with dosing trace dry is, hard to measure the tiny amount. For example, 1tbsp in 500ml, the equivalent of 5ml of that is, 0.03 tsp, you need 1/32 tsp measureing spoon(walmart or GregWatson). So I guess you could do that with the small measuring spoons, give it a swirl in a cup of water and pour it in.

Yeah, my mold was on a clear container out of the fridge after 2 or 3 weeks. BTW, on another thread someone emailed Gregg Watson about color change from green to brown. Watson gave the thumbs up to using CSM after it turns "brown" from original dirty green color. So no need to toss it just because of a color change. Makes sense to me. Isn't it mostly minerals anyhow? I decided to keep in the fridge and forego the HCL too. bob

That's how I dose my macros anyway, with the pinch, dash, smidgen spoons.

I dont mix CSM+b and MgSo4 together i keep them in seperate bottles and they sit out besides aquarium in old flourish bottles. I have been using them this way for a couple months now and no mold. So maybe the mixing of the two might cause them to mold quicker i dont know( just a thought). And i use distilled water also to mix them this might also be the reason i have no mold. Hope this helps ya!

I just found a bunch of milky, cottony mold in my plantex. It's been in an opaque container under my stand for just over a week. Go figure. I'm going to start storing my 250ml batches in the fridge and portioning it out as needed into a tiny plastic container. My 250ml Flourish Excel bottle is nearly empty (waiting on the 2l) so I'll use that for the large batches.
