more phosphates

I used a Salifert Phosphate test on my tap water. I know my county adds them. It is a little hard to read but looks to be between 2 and 3 ppm phosphate. Will this be a problem for the tank (I think not as they should get used up by the plants?)

Secondly, my test only goes to 3ppm so do I need a different test?

thanks

I use the AP testkit and it goes pretty high (10 ppm i think). It gets harder and harder to distinguish between the colors though as you get above 5ppm. Should be better for the range you are aiming for though.

How often do you do water changes? The 2-3 range is what you should aim for anyway (really toward the lower side of though). As your plants consume the phosphates you will just need to either dose back up to 2 or do a water change bring it back up.

Lucky in a sense though. My tap water has 0ppm phosphates. Have to constantly measure and re-dose around water change time.

thanks Spar. Ill get the AP test. That will give me one for the low to really low and one for the higher. I plan on doing 30 - 50% wc per week. I guess Ill see how that works.

at that rate you may not even have to dose. would be one less hassle to deal with

be sure to measure for the first couple weeks anyway just to make sure. if it ever drops under 1.5ppm I would consider dosing mid-week.
