What is buffering my tank?

I have two tanks. Both are on RO. Both have Eco-Complete. Both have bettas and nerites.

One is higher light, dosing Excel daily with Flourish weekly. Upgrading this to CO2 next week. Has a piece of malaysian driftwood, rotala rotundiflora, a moss ball and some flame moss. pH is basically 6.4, which is approx what my RO comes out as. Filter has bioballs and white sponge media. No carbon.

The other one is lower light. Flourish weekly. No CO2. Piece of mopani driftwood, java fern and taiwan moss. pH is around 7.4, when the RO going in is ~6.4. Filter has bioballs and black sponge media. No carbon. Am using Purigen to control tannins from driftwood.

Any ideas on the drastic difference? Tank is doing fine, just looking for an explanation.
