Question Testing Parameters With Multimeter

Has anyone ever tested their aquarium water using a multimeter?

I read that the purest water can be is 18 meg-ohms per cm. and the more dissolved solids it contains the more conductive it becomes (fewer and fewer ohms). The Fluval G Series filters has something like this built-in, right?

My multimeter is digital and when I test my tap water with the voltage setting it measures in negative mVolts. Turns out I was doing an ORP test according to this website: http://h-minus-ion.vpinf.com/ORP-and-correlation-with-reducing-action.html

Ohms are a measure of resistance not voltage...

I would be surprised if the average multimeter could appropriately be used for this purpose especially because it will be quite dependent on the amount of water (linear distance? Volume?) over which the resistance between the probes is measured...
