API Nitrate Test Issue

Either I'm color blind or the API Nitrate Test color coded card looks identical for 10ppm and 20ppm. Can others tell the difference?

just bought one this week and the new color card is very different than my last one... 10 & 20 look a lot alike.

I have both versions. One with the same color coding for both 10 and 20. Another one with different color coding. You can mix half of your testing solution with water with no nitrate source. This will keep your reading either under 10 or 20...

Good idea.

Now, what were they (API) thinking with that color code.

"Seachem MultiTest: Nitrite & Nitrate" comes with a continuous color band which you slide across a paper window to interpret a test. It is therefore less ambiguous.

Just got the new test and have found the same. In my head I figured 10-20ppm are practically the same thing and keeping a nitrate level less than 10ppm seems sorta pointless. And in all that I have gathered plants do rather well with 20, 30, 40+ nitrate ppm, so I just keep mine between 20-40 (where the test result is clearly more red), and my plants do great and algae is almost non-existent. Famous last words...

I hate it when I buy a bag of air, and there are chips in it.

The card that came with my multi-test kit shows 10 and 20 as the same color, but when I bought just the nitrate kit the card shows them as different colors. I just use the one from the standalone kit.

Do the 10 ppm colors match on the two cards? Is it the 20 ppm color that is different (darker?)?

Neither color totally matches. The 10 is more yellow than on the master kit's card and the 20 is more red.

I couldn't get a really good picture, but hopefully this gives you the idea:

i just got a api master kit and the same thing. if you look at it in one type of light it looks like 1 reading if you look at it in another it looks like a differnt reading. I think next time i'll have to find a better test kit for nitrates as well.
