Probably Dumbest Question of the Day...

How do you guys measure hardness and softness of water? I have the API Master Freshwater kit but it doesn't have a test for that?? I never paid attention to hardness or softness but I'm getting ready to buy some high grade CRS and guess now is the time to care. Also, TDS? I know that this is probably a real dumb question but I don't have any clue.

Can anyone recommend a good test kit? Website? Links? Etc?

you can get a tds meter for $20 and up almost anywhere that sells aquarium or water filtration supplies.

for gh/kh, i used the red sea test kits for the longest time. they can be bought the same as the API master kit with the red sea deluxe freshwater lab or individually by several different brands including API.

API also sells a kH and gH test kit with both tests in one box. I have it and it is very easy to use and gives you a good idea what your kH and gH are. Test kit was around $6 online.

kH stands for carbonate hardness and gH is general hardness. The lower the reading the softer the water and vise versa.

As far as TDS goes you could buy a TDS meter but IMO its a waste of money. You can just look up your town or cities water report online and it should tell you what that is.

Good luck

I got the Api gh/Kh combo also. I bought the master kit without reading about the contents, thinking it included the gh/kh... The combo kit is easy to use and read. I paid like $6.50 at the LFS
