Clay and sand (blasting grit)?

Can anyone chime in how beneficial it is to have clay in the blasting grit substrate?

The clay is the mexican red clay by Amaco. It's a 1lb clump I'll break off. I saw this off one of the you tube videos.

I saw some people put it at the bottom of the substrate, some on top of the second layer? Which is better?

Did you end up doing this? I was thinking of putting some clay under black diamond sand instead of going all out and doing dirt under the sand.

I just add x2 boxes of Pure Laterite with Number 1 and 3 size sand on a 55g tank and had good plant growth.
