What are good water parameters??

Hello all,
I am new to the planted tank hobby. I have had freshwater before but stopped 2 years ago and started a reef. I decided to start up again with a planted tank.
I just wanted to get a good idea of what 'good' water parameters are in a planted tank.
I want to mostly do tetras and some small catfish....basically colorful, docile fish and some shrimp.

Right now...these are my parameters:

pH - 7.3
GH - 40mg/L (I believe this is soft water) let me know if I am wrong!
Temp - 76F
I am slowly builing my iron up....

Let me know If I am on the right track! Thanks!

I have a 55 gallon with canister filter, 4 inches of substrate that has flourite and eco complete covering it. 80 watts Triton and 40 watts of Power-Glo.
I also have 2 large pieces of driftwood.
I also have just 3 plants in there so far....
No fish yet.

Thanks!

Good to see you coming back to fresh.
There is always some contraversy on what are the perfect water conditions.
You can grow plants in almost any water conditions. For the sake of argument.
KH - 3
GH - 5
Many would consider this to be middle of the road and exceptable. Your PH will vary depending on your CO2 injection. They are directly related.....i dont have the link on me now, but i am sure someone will post it so that you can see how. As far as the other conditions....they will change as you fertilize. The key is to have a good start.....make sure you know what you want to keep. Make sure you have acceptible lighting and equipment for your goals. Your lighting now is modest at best.
Keep asking questions and we will all help you get there.
Cheers

Take a read through www.rexgrigg.com. Lots of good FAQ-like info on most things you'll need to know about a planted tank.
