Do you have to add fertz if you use C02 and high light?

I'm learning as I go, so don't crucify me if this is a dumb q, but am I setting my tank up for failure by not using some sort of fertz? I thought I was going to have a rather low tech tank, but the more I read, the more I think maybe I'm wrong. My tank is in the 'well lit' category according to essabe's spreadsheet and will have DIY CO2 added next week. I was looking at PPS Pro, but just wondering what's the downside if I don't fertilize the tank.

Thanks!

You might want to reduce your lighting by either removing bulbs or raising the fixture further above your tank if you have high lighting. The downsides of not fertilizing in a high light, DIY CO2 tank could be poor plant growth and good algae growth.

It's kind of like asking- will I grow up healthy if I leave calcium out of my diet.

Planted tanks are all about balance- if you increase light, you need to make sure you provide an adequate supply of all the other nutrients plants need to grow. If you don't, your plants will eventually start failing.

Now- there are other ways to provide nutrients besides just dosing the water column. Fert tabs and very rich substrates are sufficient for some tank setups.

true. Plants are like humans too. They cant survive by co2/oxygen and water alone. They need all the nutrients they can capture.

Consider the combination of high light and Co2 equaling you doing exercise and the lack of fertilizers equaling you not eating properly. Sure, you can do it, and you're going to drop the pounds, but you're not going to be healthy or look very good!

And, if you are a green thing growing under water your bad health will soon cause you to be covered with black fuzz! You won't enjoy that at all
