Fe Dosing ?

I dose EI and make up wet solutions of macro & micro ferts and I'm using Plantex CSM+B for micros but I'd like to add some more iron. I needed to get some KNO3 so it was a good time to order Iron Chelate 11% DPTA from GLA but now how do I use it.

The EI dosing regime's sticky said:

Mixing Trace Element and Iron, Plantex CSM+B,
Fe/Iron Chelate 10%- mix 1Tbsp per 250ml water-
one cap full=5ml

40 to 60 gallon tank
10ml or 1/8Tsp-Trace 3x a week
Optional
2-4ml-Fe/Iron 3x a week

and this is when I get confused because I do this:

CMS+B, I'd add 1 TABLE spoon into 500mls of water, 1 teaspoon of MgSO4(Epsom salt), dose 15mls 3x a week for a 50 gallon tank.

So according to the sticky my trace is half strenth and I'm actually dosing 3/4 of the reccomended rate and it's been working good so far. So I guess I should treat the Fe the same way and make a 1 tbsp to 500ml of water solution and try dosing 3 to 6 ml, 3 x per week? I know it not that critical but I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Do I need Excel in my Fe solution, does it mold like Plantex?

Thanks for your help.

I haven't had an issue with mold in any of my fert mixes..

When I was dosing Iron for the plants that need it like e tenellus, you want to dose it daily as it's only active in the water column for about that long at best as depending on the water ph and the type of iron you're using, it could only be active for half that time.

Other than that you're dosing schedule sounds fine, EI is really just about finding out what your plants need/use and dosing accordingly. The guidelines are just the recommended usage, but every tank is different

here's a link to the iron info:

Thanks HolyAngel, nothing like a good argument, but I got the answer.

I guess my amounts are ok then.

My Plantex molds up in two weeks if I don't put 5 ml of Excel in.

Well it came via USPS and I mixed up 1 tbsp to 500 ml of tap water and dosed 12 ml in a 150 gallon tank, I guess if I see any result it will take a week or more, if you have any thought please post them.

Hmm...according to the mix portion of the sticky, 1 tablespoon = 250ml of water. 1/4 tablespoon = 20ml. For 500ml of water, shouldn't you add 2 tablespoons instead so that 20ml of the solution would equal to 1/4 tablespoon? I see you want half the strength....

It does say that but that's starting to get a little dated so I picked up on something plantbrain posted with lesser amounts and like it better so I though I dose the Fe accordingly with that in mind. I dosed 12 ml of the Fe last night on a 150 gallon tank and the plants seemed a little greener so will see, or it could be my eyes playing tricks. Fe dosen't take long to show results in my experience, I was in the Landscape business for 20 years and we sprayed lawns with Chelated Iron and you could see results in 24 hour with the full result in no more that 72 hours, I used to do my own lawn weekly until it was so dark green my neighbors would almost crash from rubber necking as they drove by, just don't spray it on any walkways it reacts with concrete and turns a nice rich orange. I hoping my aquatic plants have the same quick reaction.
