Need help please!

Hi guys I've been using API ammonia tests and the reading has been at zero but recently changed to a brand new aqua one ammonia test kit because the API one is a few years old and likely expired. The aqua one test kit is showing 1.5 mg/l ammonia even after repeat wc.
Now my question is: is this a false positive reading? Or has the API test kit been showing me false negatives because it has expired?

Its expired, or all your fish would be dead.

Does it measure NH3 or NH4?

True. What kind of substrate do you have? Since if you have ASA(aquasoil amazonia), and you you're tank is still somewhat new, 2-3 months, you'll get ammonia readings no matter what since the ASA leaks huge amounts of ammonia.

My advice would to bring your water to a LFS and have them test it since they constantly have people bringing in their water for testing so their test kits aren't even close to the expiration date. Unless....you have a really bad LFS :p

Thanks for your reply guys. That's the thing. Tap water on aqua one comes as a 0 ammonia reading so that is why I thought the API kit had expired.

Lol I think Urine only builds up ammonia when left stagnant. That's why Bear Grylls drinks it fresh

Grab a bottle of ammonia, windex, or other ammonia containing compound. The tap should read 0ppm I'm pretty sure. The chlorine and ammonia would make a nasty gas.

Props on the pee test. That was a good line of thinking despite the urea factor. and lol @ bear gryllz
