Buying ferts for first time. What to get?

New question in post #10...

I'm about to buy some ferts for my 54 gal corner tank. I'm thinking I'll go with dry ferts and dose according to the sticky at the top of this forum.

I'm looking at getting some KNO3 and KH2PO4 from this website:
http://www.bobstropicalplants.com/st...x.php?cPath=41

Can I get a better deal? And will those 2 be enough? I have a bottle of liquid to dose iron and another for magnesium that I already had from my reef tanks. And can adjust GH with baking soda if need be.

What else do I need? It doesn't seem worth it to buy the $25 or $30 pack when I can just get a pound ofKH2PO4 for $5 and a pund of KNO3 for $2.50? Is that all I'll need?

If it matters I will be keeping mostly swords and anubias for now. I'm running a 2XT5HO fixture and will be running a paintball CO2 setup if it doesn't run out too fast.

Pm xjaypex and see if he can hook you up with a starter pack that includes everything you will need to dose.

Sorry no one replied, you need:

Kno3
Kh2po4
Csm+b
Iron (if RO water get EDTA 13% chelate, if tap water then DTPA)
MnSO4

And that's it ^^ you'll have to get the iron from aquariumfertilizer.com if you need the edta 13% chelate, and the csm+b is cheaper there too. The rest, including the dtpa iron, get from greenleafaquariums.com

What about some GH booster for a Ca or Mg source (as well as extra K)?

Okay, not a whole lot of solid info in response, so here's mine. You *need*

KNO3
KH2SO4
CSM+B

That covers your N, P, K, and Trace needs. You can use K2SO4 just to make sure you've got enough K, or GH Booster for K, which also has some trace hardeners - Ca, Mn, and Mg.

At a minimum, you need the first 3 ferts at an approximate 4:1:1 ratio. If you add K2SO4, it's another :1, and if you add GH Booster instead, I'd suggest :1 or so. If you choose to add extra iron (completely optional), I'd go with :.5 on top of everything else.

All of this assumes 3x per week dosing with 50% weekly water changes.

Google EI dosing for more info, or look at the dosing thread in the ferts forum.

Basically if the kh of the tank is 4 or less then get EDTA iron as the plants can use it very easily, if its 5 or over kh, then you need dtpa as you'd need like 4 times more EDTA for the plants to be able use it with the water being that hard. Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone ^^

OK. I've got the following in my shopping cart. Does this look good?

Magnesium Sulfate - MgSO4 - 1 pound
Iron Chelate 11% DTPA 1/4 Pound
Plantex CSM+B - 1 pound
Mono Potassium Phosphate - KH2PO4 - P - 1 pound
Potassium Nitrate - KNO3 - N - 1 pound
