Test kits and accuracy (for a budget of course !)

I just received several new test kits, and I was trying them out.

I was very surprised with the variety of results. I am sharing them with you for comparisons.

-------------------------------------------------------

Red Sea Phosphate kit: Indicated (?? color didn't even come close to any of the chart colors), I assumed 1 ppm.

Lamotte kit Phosphate: 1.5 ppm
-------------------------------------------------------

AP Nitrate kit: 10ppm (which I know is correct).

Red Sea Nitrate kit: 0 (!!) ppm WRONG.

-------------------------------------------------------

AP GH kit: 5 dkh

Red Sea GH kit: 5dKh

-------------------------------------------------------

AP Kh kit: 7 dkh (WRONG)

Tetra Kh kit: 4 dKh

Second Tetra Kh Kit: 3.5 dKh

Red Sea Kh kit: 4 dKh

-------------------------------------------------------

These test where repeated several times to assure repeatability of results.

Lesson learned. Own more than one manufacturer's test kit.

I like very much to see all manufacturer's dating their products for expiration dates.

For the most part I can confirm you, or you confirm my experience (thanks!). No surprise on the Red Sea NO3 kit. I hardly hear about one that works well or had one last long. The AP KH kits always gives me a few more degrees then Tetra and RedSea. The AP, Tetra, and Red Sea GH kits always give the same results.

For the Red Sea PO4 kit - are you looking straight down into test tube? Try holding the card and test tube under a bright light (aquarium PC light is good). The test tube should be a few inches from the white background of the card. The instructions also give directions to make it more accurate incase the phosphates are high. This is one of the best kits I've ever used.

Its good to see consistent readings.

Interesting that the AP Kh is also higher for you by almost the same factor.

Their GH solution is pretty accurate.

I did three tests with the PO4 Red Sea test. I will try it once again on my tap water since I know that its 0.5ppm at this time of year.

I will see how it does.

Good info.

RS PO4 kit - Just make sure to look straight down into the test tube, NOT from the side. That makes all the difference on if it matches the color chart or not.
