What are the best cheap tests for parameters?

Hi,

I was a little overwhelmed by the calibrating tests sticky. Possibly there is a lot more I should be doing to test the parameters.

The hand me down kit I have has expired.

Budget is an issue. I don't mind a little work. What brand or kind of tests should I get?

Thanks,

Christy

Wkndracer I really appreciate your generosity, always being there to answer.

I see that they have a master kit or individual kits.

My water is alkaline here.

I am cycling a tank. Can I get away with just getting the ammonia and nitrate test for now?

I have a dip test with the squares. It comes out okay on the everything but not sure if it is old and not working.

So is it enough to get the ammonia and nitrate for now?

Thanks for your help,

Christy

Only getting two I would get ammonia and nitrite once these test at zero you know your safe for adding fish. Once the nitrite converts (testing zero) to nitrates it seems NO3 always jumps right to >30ppm in my tanks so at 0.0 nitrite I do a water change and start loading my tanks.
