Water Filters

At home I have a 2 stage water filter on my sink for drinking water. Here in Arizona the water is pretty hard. Will this filter reduce water hardness? Is there any reason why this water wouldn't be better to use for my tank than tap? I don't have a tds meter, kh or gh test kits although I probably should.

Filter I have: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018MXH04

My guess is that your filter contains a sediment filter and some form of carbon filter. This won't reduce hardness but the carbon can reduce organics and chlorine contaminats. It will probably be better than straight tap water. If you want to soften your water you need to upgrade to or add a reverse osmosis stage.

Yes it does have a sediment filter and carbon. Thanks for the info. Its only a 5.5 gallon so I think i'm gunna buy RO and do 1/2 tap and 1/2 RO water.
