GH and KH for the planted tank...umm...explain??

okie. Well I have found/figured WHAT GH and KH are. but not really anything as to their actual affect on the planted tank.

I'm running on very soft city water with a 0 on both kh and gh.

I could raise them by doing the math and mixxing a solution for a peristaltic pump bottle....

But why should I care? please explain it some one

Two very important nutrients you are lacking with a 0 gh - Calcium and Magnesium. White leaves, crinkling growth, dark veins, poor nutrient uptake in general could result. A 0 kh will make it hard to keep the ph stable which could be dangerous. That is about all I can share.

Without Algae, death of mankind would be inevitable.

On the same subject---raising GH using Epsom salt---are there any bad side effects to look out for? I am looking to raise GH and leave KH low for a shrimp tank.

If you want to raise GH (it won't be permanent), you might want to go with GH Booster. Calcium, magnesium, and manganese, rather than just the magnesium (MgSO4).
