I gassed my shrimp :(

Came home today to tons of shrimp "dead" and an algae fish "dead" and all my rasbora gasping at the top.

My drop checker was orange....never seen that before.

I have a skimmer attachment to my Fluval and I disabled it and i guess that lessened the off gassing of the CO2.

Anyhow started pulling shrimp and the fish out and threw them on a towel....short bit later while pulling more out I saw the fish flapping around. So I threw them all back in >.<

Some of the shrimps legs are twitching I think.

Did an immediate water change, turned CO2 off and placed an air stone in the tank. Also turned the skimmer back off to help off gas.

Going to wait two hours to see if any of these shrimp come back from their fainting spell and the ones that dont get the boot.

Darn you technology!

It happens.... This weekend I added 30 rasbora to my tank. I turned off the co2 on WEDNESDAY in preparation. The drop checker on saturday morning was darkish green. I dripped them for a few hours then put them in. Something came up and I had to go. I was back in 2 hours. ALL DEAD.

So now the replacments are in the tank, but I have been running PURE oxygen into the tank at .25 lpm for 24 hours. They are doing great. Might go get more....

When adding co2 back, I will do it over about 2 weeks. Go slow.

Hey Justin, I have some CRS coming tomorrow and I'm ruining mine at 1 bps, should I turn it off tonight? I will do a wc as I am dripping the shrimp... If so, how long should I wait before turning it back on? Thanks.

I would turn it off now and do a little aerating. I was very surprised to see that after 3 days the co2 levels were enough to kill new livestock. And I run a koralia with lots of surface ripple.

So it's the shock of being transferred into water with mid-high levels of co2 that harm new inhabitants?

Or the pH change.

Steve

It is the co2. The pH change is really not relevant, as long as the KH and Gh are similar. I had drip acclimated for two hours(and my tank water was from the same tap water as the LFS).

Okay, so if I turn off my co2 now, how big of a water change should I do before I put the CRS in? Thanks Justin.

More important than water change(unless it is time for one) is just aerating the water column.

Reason I changed water was to remove some of the CO2 saturated water and add aerated water back in.

So is it good to turn off co2 before acclimating new shrimp to a tank and maybe do a partial water change?

I don't think so. Maybe a slow drip for them

If my drop checker is blue, will I be alright?

I added 2 zebra danios into my 29 when the drop checker was lime green. They turned out Aok. Now as far as shrimp I wouldn't risk it. I would turn on the air stone till the drop checker turnes blue.
