Super high GH/KH when using RO water

First thing out of the way, its not the RO water

I am getting 14DGH and 11DKH and I just did a 5 gallon water change on my 40B.

My pH probe shows the water at 6.0 pH and I am running CO2 really high right now (bright yellow drop checker) in order to combat some algae at the moment.

First off how does hard water affect me other than fauna? If it doesn't then screw it. If it helps algae then I need to find a solution.

I have another 20H tank that has florite instead of aquasoil and it has no rocks where as the 40b has "bowl rock" which from prior research is suppose to be inert. The 20H has a way lower GH/KH and isn't running CO2.

I'm thinking bowl rock is to blame. How did you experiment to find it inert? Vinegar doesn't work.

I say put the bowl rock in a bucket of RO water and an air stone, let it sit a few days and test the water. I've seen holey rock labeled as bowl rock before in an LFS, it was white, and it definitely raises GH and KH, fast and high.

Will it cause anything with algae? Fauna and flora seem fine so I'm not worried about the hardness.
