Nitrates @ 20ppm naturally - add KNO3 anyways?

Every time I test my water the nitrates are always around 20 ppm. Probably from fish waste, plant matter, and decomposing food. Do I need to dose with KNO3 anyways? Thanks for any input.

Try not dosing KNO3 for a while see if that affects the plants at all. If not, keep on NOT dosing.

this.

not knowing anything else about your tank, I'd guess you are fine. The only thing that we really might encounter is a potassium deficiency, which is relatively common to start.

it's been running for about 6 months. No new plants. 1 - 3 inch jack dempsey, 2 - black skirt tetra's, 1 oto, 1 golden chinese algae eater. I don't think these fish should produce the amount of waste necessary to fertilized this tank, so i'm baffled.

What do you dose? My nitrates were sort of high because I needed to dose potassium. Another time my phosphate was sort of high because nitrates were zero.

In both cases the tank did have issues however. If all your plants are fine then do try stopping the potassium nitrate for a while and see how it goes.

It is very likely that your nitrate test kit is giving you incorrect results. Unless you calibrate the test kit it can't be relied on. The tank does look good though. As asked above, what else are you dosing and how much light do you have?

I use Spectracide stump remover(Potassium Nitrate, KNO3), Fleet enema (Potassium Phosphate, PO4), and Morton salt substitute (Potassium Chloride, PCL), and Flourish for micros. I follow the Tom Barr dosing schedule and amounts. Does anyone dose Magnesium(epsom salts)? Maybe I'm missing a nutrient that's limiting my plants uptake of nitrates? Since nothing is dying, i'll just leave out the KNO3 for a while. It's been a week and the levels are still at 20ppm.
