variables in co2 charts:calculators

What in a tank can affect the readings on co2 measurement. I have heard if you use peat in the filtration it alters the reading, but what else will? I'm using diy co2 and am trying to get the most accurate measurement, and have just ordered a co2 indicator to help. Do these work?

Why have I seen people asking about these CO2 indicators on 4 different forums in the last 48 hours?
If you're asking about the 'stick it in the tank' indicator...sure it works, but it's not gonna be helpful as it'll only tell you 'low, normal, high'...not any specifics like 15ppm.

Anything that alters your pH from what it would normally be will affect the CO2 chart. Peat and phosphate buffers are the two likely sources. Peat makes the water more acidic, just like a lot of decomposing driftwood will.
I'm not sure how to get accurate CO2 levels when using peat...as I do not use peat and don't know a lot who do.
