Lamotte 3110 color reader issues? Look the same?

Hi All

I just got the Lamotte 3110 kit. I can see it is a high end kit (and can see my plants must be starving because I got a 0ppm reading, doh!)

My only issue I can foresee with the kit is that color points 1.0 and 2.0, and 8.0 and 10.0 look similar to the point of identical. No joke, and I work with color a lot in graphic design. I've looked at it under different light, too.

I thought I remember reading someone else on here had a similar issue and Lamotte sent them a replacement color reader because there were some problematic ones? Did they send one, and, if so, did it help?

Anyone else with this problem? Granted, I'll probably be keeping my readings around the 2.2 mark for 10ppm. But for a $45 kit, everything should be in tip top order. I know some of you might not have this issue at all.

~ Mildly bummed.

The differences are subtle, but they should not be identical. I would contact LaMotte about it.

They do indeed look the same but they are not. In order to get a more accurate color differential I found it best to backlight the comparator to a light bulb or a sunny window while looking thru it. This accentuates the color differences.

you guys are probably right.

ambient sunlight wasn't enough to reveal the differences. But holding it up to my 96w AH Supply kit light showed an EVER SO slight difference in the colors.

granted, I was blinded in the process and can no longer see anything

If you are into Graphics Design do you have any white Gator Board lying around? I use that as a backdrop to look at. Easier on the eyes.

I've certainly noticed the same thing. I'm still looking for that ideal light source...Brian.

i think I might have some Gator board. I might still give Lamotte a call just to ask, as I do remember a post here of someone else calling Lamotte and they said there were a few problematic color readers.

Yeah they sent me out a new one. Lamotte has actually changed the comparator from a liquid filled to a colored plastic comparator. Still didn't help much. I think I would go with the hach kit next time around.

I have the colored plastic comparator on the nitrate kit. My 3121 Phosphate kit has the liquid filled comparator which can be challenging to read at times.

I've just come to the conclusion that I'm color-blind (they're ALL hard to tell the difference to me ... Lamotte, AP, Red-Sea, makes no diff.) Oh, excuse me. That's probably "color challenged" these days ....
