Ferts Toxicity

I have several well-planted nano (1 G-2.5G) tanks. I've been using SeaChem's ferts (Flourish & Excel) with their "eye droppers" to add my dose portions (1 shot & 1/2 a shot, respectively) and had no problems with any of the fish (killies only tank, pygmy gouramies+mosquito rasbora, scalet badis+pygmy cories+bumblebee goby, etc. for each of the other various tank). The only "problem" I've had in the past has been pH lowering by the Excel for higher dosings.

This week I ran out of Flourish and so tried Leaf Zone. I also used the cap (about 1/2) to try & proportion the dosing of it. When my badis & gobies & cories reacted badly (namely: twitching = toxic shock?), I changed the H2O and that seemed to fix it for that tank [BTW, I also stopped & did not dose any of the other tanks.].

Has anyone else experienced / had such a fert toxic dosing episode?

Has anyone else seen such a differerence between brands (Seachem, Leaf Zone, etc.)?

Are there ANY test kits for ferts?

I've used leaf zone, but stopped because it seemed like a cheap fert. Plus it doesn't give you much control over the two nutrients it contains, Iron and Potassium.
I never had any problems with fish when using it though.

the levels needed to cause toxicity are quite high, if you do weekly water changes, it's very unlikely.
