diy root tabs question

hi so i’m thinking of setting up my first planted tank and have been doing my research. i have seen that people generally recommend oscomote gel tabs. this got me thinking: could you make a diy gel tab with liquid fertiliser? if so is it as good as oscomote?

cheers,

Hi @rtrimpin,

Welcome to TPT!

I would not suggest it. Why? With Osmocote Plus the nutrients are in time release pellets that release the nutrients over months (amount released is dependent upon temperature). And although almost 50% of the nitrogen in Osmocote Plus is in the form of ammonia (which can be toxic to fish) the fact that it is released slowly over time allows the bacteria in the tank to convert the ammonia to nitrates before it becomes toxic to fish. A liquid would be released as soon as the gel cap dissolves (less than an hour) and flood the tanks with nutrients.
