GH/KH refresher?

I知 figuring out what test kits I need to buy when I move, and I知 not exactly sure I remember what GH and KH stand for again (aside from general and carbonate hardness). Since I値l be keeping both freshwater and saltwater tanks, I知 trying to minimize any crossover tests as much as possible. So...

KH: I know this stands for carbonate hardness. Therefore it must measure CO_3 ^2- (carbonate) levels. Is that all that it contains? Or does it also include other molecules?

GH: General hardness. I致e been treating it as a 登h it only measure Calcium ions in the water thing. I think I知 wrong here. Does it measure anything else, like magnesium ions? Sodium and potassium ions?

So many fish/plants/inverts to keep, not enough aquaria.

Carbonate hardness also measures bicarbonate anions.

General hardness measures calcium and magnesium cations. It doesn't measure sodium nor potassium cations. This is why humans refer to 'soft' water as that without calcium/magnesium cations (their absence prevents the hard water stain from forming). However, this is generally achieved through cation exchange process, with the divalent cations being replaced by two monovalent sodium or potassium cations instead.
