Top off water vs. WC water vs. cat water...

So let's see, when doing a WC in an invert tank, you should use remineralized water...

When topping off water from evaporation, you should use RO/DI water (or tap, if that's your base)...

But what if it turns out that missing gallon is thanks to your evil jerk of a cat?

Does that count as evaporation?

And how do you electrify the tank without harming the inhabitants?

Theoretically speaking, of course.

Ive got 3 cats- 2 are well-behaved- the third is my "problem-child". Loves to take a morning drink out of my open top tank on kitchen counter.

It would be like a water change because you got water taken out not evaporated

My cat loves drinking from my tanks as well.

The reason you use DI/RO water to replace evaporated water is that when water evaporates, all the dissolved solids/minerals/etc. are left behind and increase the concentration in your tank water.
Adding "pure" water without other stuff in it lowers the concentration back down.
If all you ever did was top off evaporation with remineralized water, the concentration of all the other stuff in the water would get excessively high.

When your cat drinks, he's taking water and all that other stuff out as well.
You should definitely treat it just like a water change.

Haha! You people and your cats.

(He says... as he now has to cover some of his tanks to keep a little Dachshund-Terrier mix out of them. )

Cute cat, and nice color-match on the collar!

My ex-stray cat only likes moving water. My bedside utility tanks are his new favorite, so I got to shut down the stupid plastic recirculating water bowl that didn't quite fit any of my filter media. I may make him his own drinking tank.

The issue for me is how much of the loss is from the sphincter cat and how much from the family's newfound love of the fireplace during the recent cold wave. The tank's only been running since July, so evaporation's very hard to guesstimate.

What about a lid? It will prevent your cat from getting in your tank and cut down a lot on evaporation.

I'm making simple ones out of greenhouse polycarbonate panels but you can do them out of glass as well.

I might have to, considering the cat and the snails who like going walkabout. Not sure about how it will work with the amazon frogbit or how to cut, fit, and secure the glass though. Guess I can get it professionally cut.
