Where did the ammonia come from?
Four weeks ago I tore down my 10gal, and moved everything to a 20L and added more plants and a couple guppies. Test results a few days after were 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, 5 Nitrates.
Today I did a water change, and added 4pumps Tropica fertilizer. I added a new light a week ago and have been noticing the beginnings of green spot algae, so decided to test again today. My results were .25 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, 10-20 Nitrates (after the water change). I had a cory die a couple days ago, now I'm thinking maybe I had an ammonia spike.
I added a new stronger light a week ago. That's when I noticed the GSA starting. So a few days ago I reduced my light period from 8hrs down to 7hrs. I added three guppy fry and two juvenile guppies a week ago as well.
Nicrew 30" light
1 M Betta
5 young guppies, 3 guppy fry
4 amano shrimp
I'd say I'm moderately planted. Initial tank was set up in April, parameters have all been good since it cycled until today. I can't imagine adding three guppy fry and a couple of juveniles caused a spike? I do weekly water changes (with the exception of a couple times over the summer when we were away and I missed a week). I test about once a month now.
Any idea what may have caused higher ammonia? Should I do another water change today? Thanks!
