Forgot prime!

I did a 100% water change (to get rid of medication) in a 20 gallon with one goldfish in it. 2 hours later I realized I forgot to add prime. I quickly added it. The fish is bottom sitting, but he did that before the water change (he is recovering from a illness). Will he be fine? I don’t see any gasping or inflammation. He just appears slightly listless.

So much depends on the chlorine level out of your tap, whether your municipality adds chloramine, etc. The 100% water change on its own is tough, two hours in chlorinated water did no favors either. There's not much that can be done at this point. That the fish isn't gasping or laying on its side is cause for optimism though.

Nothing good happens fast in an ecosystem.

They are pretty hardy, and I'd agree that resting is far better than struggling to stay in a resting petition

Future recommendation to think about - drain water into a bucket, move fish into bucket (so no temp or parameter changes, fill tank with new water and let it cycle for a bit. Match temps and then move the fish back into the tank.

It's really hard to not shock things with temp or parameter changes in massive water changes unless you have premade the water ahead of time.

I actually floated him in a container with his old water for about 45 min to temperature match. I just forgot the prime.

How long did you have the water change water sitting around?

I fill my water change garbage can after a water change, and let it sit untill the next one.
I looked up online what is put in the water and it is called out as free chlorine.
Witch means after a week, it is gone.
I still add prime just to be on the safe side.
