Filter STINKS! Forgot to drain it after stopping it

So my eheim pro 4 canister filter [censored][censored][censored][censored]ing REEKS like a terribly stale sludgy pond. It's hard to describe but I know I've smelled it in nature before. It never smelled when it was running when my tank was up. I'm currently rescaping and dry starting.

The thing is, I've soaked and clean it in vinegar, peroxide and finally bleach... the smell is still hanging around. I'm actually more curious how this happens then how to fully clean it (hence the post in water parameters forum). Did it go fully anaerobic and have nasty bacteria grow or something?

Your bacteria probably died while it was sitting.
It could also be the bacteria death coupled with something like Blue green algae - Cyanobacteria which thrives in stagnant low oxygen environments.
Cyanobacteria is in my opinion one of the worst smelling things in the aquarium hobby, only second to the smell of dead fish.

My tank had what I believe to be the same smell when I had a few fish die without me being able to find them for about a week.

The filter is made out of plastic so bad stuff could be stuck in the small pores of the material so I would scrub it several times and let it dry out between cleanings.

Baking soda maybe. Sounds like it impregnated plastic and will probably just take time to go away. Probably that rotten egg sulfide smell..

It did have the strong sulfur smell at first. Then it was just a sludgy smell after the cleaning. Not like BGA smell.

After cleaning it with vinager, hydrogen peroxide, and bleach.
You have done pretty much everything you can do.
Nothing can live through that.

I would let it air out for a while, and see if the smell starts to go away.
