Nitrate testing

Has anyone ever noticed a difference is results from different lots of api test kits. I was running low on my nitrate test bottles and ordered a new kit. Did a test and noticed the level was off from what I expected. New test is showing a lower level than I normally have between water changes. A difference between 20 ppm and 5 ppm

I notice this with the Nitrate test specifically. I think you have to shake both bottles, especially the second one A LOT. You also have to let them sit the full 3-5 minutes.

The API nitrate test kit is notoriously difficult to perform and to interpret the results. You can make your life so much easier, and impress your friends at the same time, by getting the Salifert nitrate test kit.

No, as long as bottle #2 has always been shaken correctly before each use.

Everytime I purchase a new NO3 API test kit I do a dual test with the new and the old kit, they are about the same every time.

If the color is hard to read cut a water sample in half with RODI or distilled and test them both.
The 50% diluted one may help to determine the ppm.

My API kit is pretty on the dot when compared with a industrial grade kit from Hach. Shake the reaction for 5 minutes very vigorously and both bottles vigorously for 3 minutes instead of just #2 for 1.5 min.
