Hi guys,
So I've been smelling this weird gasoline/fuel odor in my living room and figured out yesterday that it was coming from my 12 gal.
This tank is newly cycled (2 months), all parameters are in check (zero ammonia /nitrites, 5 nitrates), has a carpet of dwarf baby tears and two leopard stones. No heater, and substrate is Ada Amazonia II. Co2 injected, canister filter Eheim 150.
It only contain my culls (shrimps).
I can't find any info online about that weird smell. It's definitely not a sulfur smell.
Any idea?

Thats very strange.

Any issues with the shrimp? Deaths?
Is it an open top? Any chance of contamination?

Gasoline has a pretty distinct odor but I would suspect if there was enough in the aquarium water to smell you would have no living shrimp. Any chance you handled the hood or something with gas on your hands?

Nothing good happens fast in an ecosystem.

Shrimps are acting completely normal and none died. Didn't touch any gasoline or anything like it. This is very strange. I know that smell very well as my stupid neighbor use to stock buckets of gasoline in his backyard to treat weeds. The smell was so bad I couldn't sleep and had a huge migraine. I'm going to keep doing small water changes every 12 hours to avoid throwing my cycle but that's extremely weird!

Are you sure nitrates are low? I'm cycling now and reminded that high nitrites has a distinct odor, like smelly fish or lakes.

Absolutely, I checked yesterday and ammonia/nitrites were at 0, nitrates below 5.
After two small water changes, the smell seems to slowly disappear...
