Need Help with RODI

I spent close to a year battling my whole-home water softener (it won). I'm starting over with a RODI setup in my basement where I will mix 35 gallons of water at a time. I've spent some time doing research, but I'm confused about exactly what values to target when I remineralize:
  • Some people are using Equilibrium, but others seem to believe that it isn't ideal
  • There seems to be differing views on whether to add kH
  • Some appear to vary the components used to add gH based on pH

As I said, I wasted close to a year, so I'd like to get this right the first time. The tank will be a high-tech tank with CO2 injection. I'll be using Tropica Aquarium Soil, which is a buffering substrate.

0 kH if using buffering substrate.

30 ish ppm +/- 10ppm for Ca. Use CaSO4 (gypsum, calcium sulfate, plaster of paris, buy from GLA or amazon)
10-15 is ppm +/- 5 ppm for Mg. Use MgSO4 (epsom salt, buy from GLA or amazon)

Use this to determine what you will need to dose:

Thank you. I noticed that some of the commercial gH boosters include some degree of K (e.g., Potassium Sulfate in GLA's Ultimate GH Booster). Is that unnecessary?

Yes. Typically getting gH up to those numbers means loads of extra, un-needed K.

You can get K from dosing KNO3 (to get NO3) and KH2PO4 (to get PO4).

If need be, you can dose K2SO4 for some extra K.

Now that I'm a few weeks into having the tank setup, I wanted to run my numbers by you. I'm dosing to 25ppm Ca and 15ppm Mg, which is giving me a gH of 5-6 and a TDS in the range of 110ppm. The tank is short and long, and has a ton of surface circulation and a skimmer running 24/7, so gas exchange should be great. pH in the tank before CO2 injection is in the range of 5.9-6.2. Is there anything that I should be concerned about here? Is your recommendation still to not add any carbonates for kH?
