I don't know exactly what causes some plants to send these out, but if it will help you do some further research, these are referred to as "aerial roots" and they're not uncommon or a sign of anything wrong.

That's completely normal - don't worry about it. It happens on just about any taller-growing plant.

The only stems I have where this doesn't happen in an extreme way are alternanthera reineckii lilacina and bacopa caroliniana. This is extremely common and arguably a good thing, as these roots are pulling nutrients out of your water column.
