I usually see a very minimal increase over the course of a few days....
Less than 1 a day basically. So its easy to monitor or measure. You could also use a piece of limestone or crushed shells/coral (craft stores- just wash it well). If you go to a landscape supply store, you can even just steal 'borrow' one little piece and put it in your filter as im not sure how they would charge you for 1x1in rock, lol.

Fun fact.... I have an 'endangered watch list bird' that I raised from an egg, and was still able to import her to USA. But before I lived on a beach and I would pick up oodles of cuddlebone almost daily. Coming to USA when I started my tanks again, it took me about 1 year to realize... OMG- I CAN USE CUDDLEBONE and CORAL FROM MY OLD HOUSE! so I have oodles on hand, lol.

I also have some 'clay' Manu Mineral block... it is meant for birds but the calcium and other mineral content makes me curious if I could use that as well as my bird no longer has any interest in it.

@livebearerlove Day #3 of using a whole piece of cuttlebone in the filter compartment of the 3.7 gallon. The first day it went up to 1 KH, and after testing today, it's still 1 KH. Hoping it will rise over the next few days. Will it eventually get higher? To 3-5 KH? I checked for limestone on Amazon before but didn't see any listings.

@Ryan Mosby
I have a entire box filled with it. I can send you some.
It may... just takes time... no way to know how it buffers. Slow and steady wins the race.
