Question Low pH Distilled Top Off Water Shrimp Problems?

I have a little 2 gallon shrimp tank I run borderline Walstad, so I top off using distilled bottled water from Walmart to keep the hardness in check. When I add water I notice sometimes my shrimp freak out, even crawl out of the water from time to time. There is nothing in the distilled water that would bother them, it is pure water. The only thing I can think of is pH but I dont even add enough to effect the tanks chemistry so I do not understand this. The tank runs a pretty stable pH @ 7.4 before lighting cycle and toward the end it is the same (after photosynthesis). The top off water however is acidic, my test bottoms out at 6.0 so the distilled water is below 6.0

Should I be using an additive in my top off bottles to raise the pH?

Any other idea why it would be messing with my shrimps?

Thanks

The pH is low because RO/DI has no KH and is easily and greatly affected by CO2. It really depends on how you store it. Maybe try shaking it a ton to oxygenate before testing and see if that helps.

Also, is the water temp pretty close to matching? If you are running it like a Walstad tank, the water you are adding may be colder than in the "tank".

Sounds like a lot of shaking, maybe when it hits the tank water CO2 in the tank affects it??

Its the same temp as the tank, I do not use a heater the tank is room temperature and so is the top off water.

How much are you topping off at once? Could be too much of a change at once for them in such a small tank if you are only doing it once a week for instance. Maybe try dripping it in or adding it slowly over the course of an hour or two (I use a turkey baster for this).

Not that much but its hard to put into measurement for you. I have even let it get "really" low then top it way off, test it after about 10min and the pH doesn't change.
