Kh,Gh, & pH Questions...
I'm pretty new to the hobby and am trying to gain a better understanding of Kh and gH, and how it pertains to pH and overall water quality.
Currently, I have a male Betta and 5 nerite snails in a lightly planted Fluval Spec V (working on a bigger home for the Betta). For plants I have:
2 small anubias
2 small swords (about 1" tall)
4 or 5 small clumps of dwarf hairgrass
about 5 short stems of bacopa carolinia
I have the stock Spec light that I run for 6 hours/day. Been battling some algae for the past couple weeks that mainly sprouts up on a piece of wood and the dwarf hairgrass and it is very lightly noticeable on the glass after a week just before water change time.
For the past 3 weeks water params have been pretty stable at:
0 ppm ammonia
0 ppm nitrites
5 ppm nitrates
Water Temp - 78 degrees F
I purchased an API Gh and Kh test kit to begin checking those. I checked Gh & Kh in my tap water and aquarium water this morning:
My question is - what does this mean? A bit confusing on the soft vs hard water in correlation to acidic vs alkaline. I know Bettas can live in a wide range of Gh so not as worried about that as I am the Kh to maintain stable pH.
Am I on the right track or way out of whack?
