What deficiency in R macrandra?

This tank has been running and stable for about 6 months, Dosing per ei with kh2po4, kno3, and csm+b. Co2 at roughly 4bps. I recently noticed a few pinholes in older growth on a few plants so I started dosing k2so4. Now a week later rotala macrandra is turning pale and growth is stunted. Any ideas? The only change has been tge addition to k2so4. [URL=http://s20.photobucket.com/user/peglegburnout/media/1022181316b.jpg.html][/URL

Hi @peyton,

What pH is your tank?

Hi @peyton,

The reason I asked the pH or your tank is it appears to be an iron deficiency (pale, almost white new growth).

Based upon the pH and the CSM+B as the only source of iron an iron deficiency is likely. Why? Doesn't CSM+B contain iron? Ye, CSM+B does contain iron, however it is EDTA Chelated iron which works fine in acidic (pH < 7.0) conditions but doesn't 'break down' and allow the iron to be become to the plants in alkaline (pH > 7.0). At a pH of 7.6 less than 5% of the iron you are dosing is available to the plants.

Here is what I suggest. Dose all of your nutrients as you have been including the CSM+B (because it contains necessary micro-nutrients besides iron). Pick up a bottle of Seachem Flourish Iron and dose it 2 times per week per the instructions on the bottle (1 teaspoon per 10 gallons twice a week). Do the dosing for two weeks and watch the new leaves as they emerge; do not look at the existing leaves....they will not change. Do the new leaves they look healthier with better color? After two weeks post another picture to this thread with an @Seattle_Aquarist and we will evaluate the progress.

What is different about Seachem Flourish Iron verses most iron supplements? Seachem Flourish Iron is made from ferrous gluconate which is much easier for plants to uptake than the ferric form of iron in CSM+B. If the Seachem Flourish Iron resolves the problem you can purchase ferrous gluconate from various on-line aquatic plant food suppliers and mix your own to save some money.

I suspected iron but I thought since I was dosing a 40g in the 40-60g ei schedule that iron would be sufficient. I havn't heard about the effect of ph on iron availability. Good to know. I ordered a bottle of flourish iron this morning and will post results. Thanks!

Well its been over a month. I started dosing flourish iron on top of csm+b. I definitely see some improvement in the tank. I also started dosing magnesium because I was seeing what looked like a mg deficiency in some plants. So my dosing schedule right now is sun, tues, thurs, 1/2 tsp potassium nitrate, 1/8 tsp potassium phosphate, 1/8 tsp epsom salts, 1/8 tsp potassium sulfate. Mon, wed, fri, one capfull flourish iron and 1/8 tsp csm+b. I notice on some days there is a cloudiness to the water for some reason. Maybe a potassium/iron issue? I'll post a update pic a little later today @Seattle_Aquarist .
