Confused by Fishless Cycle Readings
A Brief summary and background to my confusion...
I have a Ehiem Pro 3 which has been dormant since the first week of April. It was partially drained and stored under in the aquarium cabinet until last week Friday. When putting it back into use it had some odor to it, far less of a "bad" smell than I was expecting. I washed the media in dechlorinated water and started the cycle by adding ammonia to what I estimate is 5ppm.
It took a 8 days to convert the 5ppm of ammonia through to Nitrate. After 7 days I tested the tank and the ammonia result was somewhere between 0 - 0.25 (Quite possibly 0ppm) but I decided to wait for daylight to get a more accurate reading.
With both Ammonia and Nitrite reading 0ppm I dosed again and checked the readings after 12 hours. To my surprise, the Ammonia reading was 2ppm down from 5ppm and therein is my confusion.
1. I shouldn't be clearing 2ppm of ammonia in 12 hours?
Which means that if things hold, on the 9th day of the cycle, I'll be converting 5ppm of ammonia with 24 hours. Which looking at my previous cycles, puts me roughly 3 weeks ahead of schedule.
2. I shouldn't be converting Nitrite this quickly? Same scenario as above in terms of schedule. It usually takes at least two weeks for the bacteria that converts Nitrie to Nitrate to show up.
False positives. Or did I somehow get lucky?
