Question WHoa Nelly! (CO2 loss analyisis)

Waiting for my carpet, and hence my "real" tank, I decided to set up my CO2 system to see if my Eheim 2229 would burn off CO2 at a great rate. The 2229 is a sorta- kinda wet dry filter, that has a breather about 1/4" to exchange gas, and cycle about a quart or so. Otherwise, it's really just a 2228.

I have a F.O. 55 tank, and ran the co2 to it. Kh is 5 - 6, and ph via my sms122 reads about 7.4 to 7.5. I ran the grow gas a pretty high rate, and in 15 min. or so it went down to 6.8! Seems wicked fast to me. Now, an hour later CO2 has been off, the ph is still 6.8.

A) Is the ph drop/time normal?

B) Can I assume that since it now is over an hour and the ph has stayed at 6.8 that it is in fact not throwing out my co2 through that breather?

C) Do my fish hate me?

wantplantsnotwork:

Can you run the Eheim with the breather function off? If so, compare the results of on/off after a full day. Anything else is just speculation.

Moved to Tucson.

Excellent idea! No wonder I didn't think of that!

The filter runs at a much reduced rate with the breather off. It never goes into the drain mode, only the "low" mode. I'll try it though.

I would love to just run it as a reactor by plumbing directly to the breather. But in order for it to cycle, I would need a balloon of some sort for the "lung" to keep the co2 at the breather under the differing volumns. Unless I go inside and take the control mechanism out of it. Hmmm....

I'll try that idea though, and watch with a timer.
