TDS reading

I bought a TDS meter, and used it for the first time today.

I have a 173ppm reading in my water.

Currently, Iím cycling my QT, and setting up a 20g long planted. Community tank. Itíll be a Tetra dominated tank.

What does this reading mean for my future tank?

Really means nothing other than you have 173 parts per million of some unidentified thing(s) dissolved in your water. There could be that much in your tap water. You might be adding fertilizers to the tank. The fish waste and food can contribute to that number. There are a ton of variables. It implies you have relatively soft water and I'd guess a relatively low (lowish) ph, low kh and low gh. Probably well suited for tetras.

All alone TDS really doesnt mean much of anything. But combined with some other facts it can be useful. Some people use it to gauge when to do water changes. If their tap water gets a TDS reading of 100 ppm maybe they wont change the aquarium water until they get a TDS reading of 200.
