DIY ADA ferts?

I have been using Step 1 and Brighty K in combination with aquasoil on my little nano tank. The results have been pretty good overall with very little algae. From my understanding there is no Nitrogen being added by these additives instead its provided by the soil itself. I am running low on Step 1 and have been a little unsure about switching over to EI methods. In the past I've used EI successfully but end up with weird stunting issues or algae eventually. Is there a way to DIY the ADA ferts or should I just switch over to EI but use a half dose? I am going to be setting up a 70 gallon tank soon and ADA ferts are too expensive to be cost effective on a tank of that size so I figure I should use my smaller tank to test run what fertilizer I'm going to be using before toying with the big set up.
