Osmocote+ and Nitrates
I have a heavily planted tank that is CYCLED with NO FISH. I used Amazonia LIGHT in this tank and at the bottom used a light sprinkling of Osmocote+ to give the plant roots a little boost.
My nitrates are higher than I would like approximately 20 to 30 ppm and I don't quite understand why with again, no fish. I have changed 70% of the water a half dozen times but the nitrates continue to come back in just a day or two to that level even though my tap water has less than 5 ppm nitrates.
I am not positive, but I think it the Osmocote+ must be affecting the nitrate level. Any opinion here as to what could possibly cause high nitrates beside Oscomote? Anyone here that uses homemade root tabs ever notice an increase in nitrates?
Would also appreciate thoughts on what to do with this tank, is it best to tear it down and start over or should I just go ahead and add fish, monitor and change water as often as possible?
Thanks in advance.
