Recommendations for my water parameters

Hello forums,

I will soon be starting a planted 29gal fishtank, but I have a few questions regarding two main aspects linked to the kH and gH. I do not have a reading for my pH as of yet, but I will have it later this week.

kH = 6
gH = 11

Question #1: What rocks can I use for hardscape in order to make sure that I don't increase my kH/gH any more than that?

Question #2: What fish would you suggest for these parameters, assuming a pH of 7.0 ?

PS: The tank will be planted, has Seachem Fluorite substrate and 3 manzanita branches. Ideally, I would like to have Velvet Blue Dream shrimp, Neon Tetra, Emerald or Harlequin Rasbora, and some Guppies (either Endler or regular).

Thank you for your two cents!

Hello Clemroc,

I am fairly certain your pH will be above 7, but no worries - hardly anyone has a pH of 7 out of the tap. You don't need to worry about adjusting it either - leave it where it is. If you add CO2, you'll be dropping it a certain amount based on how much CO2 you add.

I don't know about the shrimp, but the fish you suggest are all fine under a wide range of water conditions - including yours.

As to the rocks, avoid anything that looks limestone-like (chalky, crumbly, porous). If in doubt, test it by putting a few drops of vinegar on it to see if it bubbles, OR soak it in your tap water for a few days and test the GH and kH to see if it goes up.

72g bowfront planted, CO2, 4x - T5HO, Eheim 2213 and 2217, 2 angels, pristella tetras, blue tetras, betta, albino bristlenose pleco, albino cories. Sword, vals, hygros, ludwigias, java moss and fern, anubias

2g Mac-quarium. Clown gravel, fluorescent plastic plants, and 2 guppies.
