Are scale inhibitors aquaria-safe?

I am curious about 'scale inhibitors' such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Pure-AP4.../dp/B00115USHS Does anyone know what exactly they do? Would one on the cold water line render the water unsafe for fish or inverts?

It is probably a calcium/magnesium cation exchanger. It will replace calcium and magnesium cations with another one (usually sodium or potassium); these other cations will not form the typical 'scale' (white, mineral deposits) that you often see.

In general, I think excess sodium is not good for livestock, but if you can find one that exchanges the minerals for potassium, it should be fine to use. Also note that there is still some degree of need for calcium and magnesium (particularly for invertebrates such as snails or shrimp)

Apparently, it's a polyphosphate filter - as per their description, it "binds calcium and magnesium so that it cannot precipitate", and also "coats pipes and appliances".
