Trust the math or the test kit?

Hello all -

Happy to say I just got my aquarium on the stand, filled with water and substrate. At least until I get my driftwood shipment I am doing a fishless ammonia cycle.

This is a 40 breeder. Both when the tank was empty of substrate for leak testing in my garage, and now on the stand, I added the required equilibrium (11 tsp) and baking soda (5 tsp) to bring it up to KH 5 GH 5 from my 0/0 tap water from a well. Both times I test it at 9 KH 9 GH a good while after the addition. What am I doing wrong? Test kit is brand new and expires in 2021.

Did you calibrate the test kit?

Calibrating is good, so you know for sure. FWIW, I trust the test kit more and usually undershoot the math. Like adding 8tsp of Eq and 3 tsp of BSoda, test, and increase if needed. Also, Equilibrium takes FOREVER to dissolve. I dissolve it in pitchers of warm water, let it sit, and then pour into tank.

BTW, @Dempsey I love the signature quote!
