Question Potassium pernitrate

Wanting to mix a Macro mix - Magnesium sulfate, Potassium dihydrogen phosphate, Potassium nitrate, Potassium pernitrate. This is a mixture that aquarium fertilizer sells. All I am missing is Potassium pernitrate. Any suggestions to where I can get it?

I'm not sure what you mean by potassium pernitrate. This compound does not exist.

I'm not sure why you would need it. Based on what you're wanting to mix it seems unneeded. You have potassium nitrate as a nitrate source. If the purpose of potassium pernitrate is to be a potassium supplement then why not use potassium sulfate or potassium carbonate instead.

I was working on making Macro mix that aquarium fertilizer sells. Macro mix - Magnesium sulfate, Potassium dihydrogen phosphate, Potassium nitrate, Potassium pernitrate.

Thanks!!

From a Yahoo answer of NO4's existence.

NO4 does not exist because O is always -2 in a compound, with 4 at -2, that is -8. To balance it you need +8. N can not be +8. Electron energy levels can not be such that N can be +8, losing 8 electrons. Nitrogen is number 7, how can it lose 8 electrons, or have a +8 charge at all?
oxidation states for N are -3,-2,-1, 0, +1,+2,+3,+4,+5

Something Fishy here!

Growing is not that difficult.

I looked at Aquariumfertlizer.com and didn't see potassium pernitrate listed in their mix, but maybe I was looking at the wrong item.

I think they gave the wrong element and actually used Potassium sulfate instead of Potassium pernitrate. For here I read macro mix is - KNO3, KNO4, MgSO4 and MKP. Potassium sulfate is K2SO4. Here I read it is mixture of potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, magnesium sulfate and mono potassium phosphate.

If it is potassium sulfate, it would make more sense in a macro mix.

As mentioned already, pernitrate, while can be theoretically found (since "nitrate" compounds have 3 oxygen molecules, "per" is the IUPAC prefix that indicates 1 oxygen molecule more; a good example is H2O2, hydrogen peroxide), is in reality, not found. Essentially, this is due to the valence charge that needs to be balanced, as Maryland Guppy also mentioned.

Typically for a macro mixture, potassium nitrate and potassium phosphate are all that is needed. If your water is particularly soft, you can use a GH booster, which typically is a mixture of calcium, magnesium and potassium sulfates.

Finally, if you feel that your plants are suffering from potassium deficiency, it is also possible to include potassium sulfate into the macro mixture.

I made something similar, but it did not work as expected, So i used it with outdoor plants. I find that using them separately is much better for aquarium use. It makes it easier to increase the amount of particular fertilizer in case of deficiencies. With a premix you do not have this option.

Cheers!!
