What to use for base layer nutrients

I have a 55 gallon tank that I am converting to a planted. All water will be drained and I need some advice on what I can put down under gravel substrate from existing tank to help add nutrients to my base layer.

If I understand you correctly you want something containing nutrients under you gravel layer?
If that is the case there is several options.
You can place a layer of Aquasoil underneath, or try the dirted tank way (potting soil without chemicals).
Osmocote is also pretty popular to mix in there.
There is also clay based stuff you can place underneath like this Tropica Substrate - concentrated bottom layer for aquariums - Tropica Aquarium Plants
That last one worked very well for my when I myself used an inert gravel substrate. But I did also dose EI at that time.
Econde and Econde like this.
