Fert Advice

Recently upgraded my lighting in this 5.5 to a 5500k CFL.
Water parameters are:
Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 40. GH 1, GH 3, PH 6.6
Plants seem to be doing well except, the Java Fern is developing one black leaf at the end.
Water Sprite is growing well.
I believe that my plants would like the addition of some fertilizer,
I'm a complete dummy when it comes to caring for aquatic plants, so any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
I do plan to add some crushed coral to help with the water parameters. I won't add anything that might compromise the well being of the fish.
Thanks.

If the tip of your Java Fern leaf is darkening, it may just be normal growth. It might also be the start of the formation of a baby plantlet (a method of propagation for Java Fern).

Regarding your water parameters, they look fine to me; in fact, if your nitrates are correct (hopefully you calibrated your test kit), you may not even need to dose nitrates and can skip it.

Regarding fertilizers, the primer (linked in my signature below) may give you some initial reading material.

Thanks very much Anthony.
Will definitely give your primer a look.
Read somewhere that a java plant leaf turning black indicated the need for fertilizer.

In your "Small Tank Advice" thread SwissCheeseHead recommended dosing micros. That's good advice. Seems like you have enough Nitrate and probably Phosphate. That leaves Potassium. Get some Potassium Sulfate and dose that stuff. Put some root tabs in the substrate if you want to. Research dosing Iron. I think your addition of crushed coral is brilliant.
