Mr Clean Auto Dry (or similar) as RO sub?

I've seen threads (on a different forum: Yeah I know, but honestly, they seem to know everything there is to know about stuff like starting plants indoors for some reason ) about using the Auto Dry to filter water nearly to RO levels. They described significantly softer water, and also lowered pH. Assuming it can do something similar with my hard Milwaukee water, does anyone know if the resulting water is safe for fish and shrimp? I only found it mentioned in one thread here, and that was ten years old, and didn't really go anywhere.
