Sticky & FAQ not helping with water parameter basics

What are all the water parameters useful to know in the hobby? What are the main ones?

The popular API Masters kit seems to test ammonia/ nitrate/ nitrite and pH. Those are easy to find at any pet shop. But it seems there are so many others discussed on this forum, hardness, gh, kh, calcium, etc, but I have zero understanding of those.

The ones you have listed in the API master kit are the important ones. Of course, GH, KH, iron, and phosphate test kits can also be useful at times.

General hardness is a measure of divalent cations, primarily calcium and magnesium, in the water.
Carbonate hardness is a measure of carbonate and bicarbonate anions in the water.
